As we begin the second chapter of 2 Timothy, we will see Paul’s passion for the gospel message and will find Paul encouraging Timothy to stay strong for the gospel through the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
Paul knows this is costly and following Christ is not easy. He knows from his own experience as he wrote Timothy from a Roman prison. He understands that hardship and sacrifice are inherent to the Christian life and the Gospel is the foundation of Christian hope.
Paul indicates that one must be strong, faithful, and have endurance to follow Christ, and uses metaphors from the military, sports, and agriculture to make his point. A soldier strives to please his commander, an athlete vigorously trains his body for competition, and the hardworking farmer works tirelessly for the reward in the distant future.
