What We Believe

The Holy Scriptures

We believe that the Holy Scriptures, the Bible, made up of 66 books of the Old and New Testament, are the verbally inspired, holy word of God, and the final authority for faith and life.

We believe that the Bible in its entirety is infallible and inerrant in the original manuscripts.

We believe that the Holy Scriptures were given by God through the agency of chosen writers, and that the Holy Scriptures speak with the authority of God while also reflecting the backgrounds, styles and vocabularies of the human authors.

We believe that there are no other writings similarly inspired by God. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Matthew 5:18; John 16:12-13)

God

We believe in the one true, holy God, eternally existing in three persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — each of Whom is co-eternal in being, and possesses equally all the attributes of deity, power, perfection and glory, and the characteristics of personality.

God, the Father — We believe that in the beginning God created the world and all things in it out of nothing, thus manifesting the glory of His power, wisdom and goodness.

  • We believe that by His sovereign power God continues to sustain His creation.
  • We believe that by His providence God is operating throughout history to fulfill His redemptive purposes. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; Genesis 1:1ff; Isaiah 40:21-31; Isaiah 6:3; Jonah 4:2; John 1:1; Acts 5:3-5; Romans 8:28-39; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Colossians 1:15-20; Ephesians 1:9-10)

God, the Son — We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary.

  • We believe Jesus Christ lived a sinless and perfect life of obedience to the Father and voluntarily atoned for the sins of mankind by dying on the cross as our vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice.
  • We believe that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from death.
  • We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God the Father, where, as our High Priest, Jesus fulfills the ministry of Mediator, Advocate and Intercessor between God and the redeemed among mankind.
  • We believe the Lord Jesus Christ shall come again to earth, personally and visibly, to consummate history and the eternal plan of God. (John 1:1-2 and 14; Luke 1:31-35; Romans 3:24; 1 Peter 2:24; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:3-5; Acts 1:9-10; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 9:24; Romans 8:34; 1 John 2:1-2)

God, the Holy Spirit — We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Triune God, sent by the Father and the Son to apply to the redeemed the saving work of Christ.

  • We believe the Holy Spirit enlightens the minds of sinners, awakens in them recognition of their need for a Savior, and regenerates them at the point of salvation.
  • We believe the Holy Spirit permanently indwells every believer as the source of assurance, strength and wisdom, and uniquely endows each believer with gifts for the building up of the body of Christ.
  • We believe the Holy Spirit guides believers in understanding and applying the Holy Scriptures.
  • We believe the Holy Spirit empowers the believer, making it possible for the believer to lead a life of Christ-like character and to bear evidence to the glory of the Father. (John 16:8-11; 2 Corinthians 12:12-14; Romans 8:9; Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:18; Ephesians 1:13-14; Acts 5:3-4; Hebrews 4:12-13; 1 John 2:20; John 15:1-10)
Salvation

We believe that the central purpose of God’s revelation in Scripture is to call mankind into fellowship with Him through the saving work of Jesus Christ.

We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God to have fellowship with Him, but that through Adam’s sin mankind fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God.

We believe that man is totally depraved, corrupted in nature, and is of himself unable to remedy his lost condition.

We believe that a believer’s salvation is wholly a work of God’s grace, not the result of any human works, merit or goodness.

We believe that by God’s grace the believer is saved through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed at Calvary for the forgiveness of sins, resulting in reconciliation and the restoration of our fellowship with God. (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:22-24; Romans 5:8 and 12; Ephesians 2:1-3 and 12; Ephesians 1:7; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 1:12; John 3:14-18; 1 Peter 1:18-19)

Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers

We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God’s power and are thus secure in Christ forever.

We believe it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God’s Word and the evidential work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. (John 6:37-40; John 10:27-30; Romans 8:1 and 38-39; 1 Corinthians 1:4-8; 1 Peter 1:3-5; Jude 24)

Human Destiny

We believe that physical death seals the eternal destiny of each person.

We believe that for all mankind, there will be a resurrection of the body and a judgment that will determine the eternal fate of each individual.

We believe that those who have rejected the Lord Jesus Christ will be separated from God eternally, and that God’s judgment will reveal His justice in consigning them to eternal condemnation for their own rejection of God.

We believe that believers in the Lord Jesus Christ will be received into eternal fellowship and communion with God, raised to everlasting joy, and will be rewarded for their works and service done in this life. (Hebrews 9:27; Matthew 16:27 and 25:31-46; John 3:18-21 and 5:19-30; Revelation 19:16-19 and 20:11-15)

The Church

We believe that upon conversion all believers become members of the Body of Christ, the one true Church universal, comprised of all those who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

We believe that this Church is expressed in the establishment and continuance of local church bodies.

We believe that the Holy Scriptures instruct believers to gather together to devote themselves to worship, prayer, the teaching of the Word of God, the observation of believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Supper, fellowship, service to fellow believers, and to mobilize as the present expression of Jesus Christ to the unregenerate and needy world. (Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 2:19-22; Ephesians 4:15-16; 1 Corinthians 3:16 and 12:13; 1 Peter 2:9; Hebrews 10:24-25; Acts 2:42-47; 1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9; Hebrews 13:7 and 17; Acts 1:8)

Ministry and Spiritual Gifts

We believe that God is sovereign in the bestowing of spiritual gifts, and that these gifts are intended to be exercised and utilized for the building up of the Body of Christ, the Church.

We believe it is the believer’s privilege and responsibility to minister according to the gift(s) and grace of God given to him. (1 Corinthians 12:1-31; Ephesians 4:7-8; Romans 12:1-8; 1 Peter 4:10-11)

Faith and Practice

We believe the Holy Scriptures to be the final authority in all matters of faith and practice.

We recognize that we cannot bind the conscience of individual believers in areas where Scripture is silent. Rather, each believer is to be led in those areas by the Lord, to whom he or she alone is ultimately responsible.

Port Gardner Community Church practices the following in handling views which may differ:

  • In essentials of faith and understanding — Unity
  • In non-essentials — Liberty
  • In all things — Love, humility and grace
