This week we move into the Book of Second Timothy as Paul continues to advise Timothy to remain solidly grounded in Christian service and to be ready to endure suffering in the difficult days to come.
These words have been important for every church leader, and especially now in a world that seems to be missing some important character traits that Paul will address. The proper foundation of Christian service is not simply excitement, reward or personal enrichment. It is found in sincere faith that is strong during difficult times that would otherwise cause many to quit or give up. We can count on opposition, suffering and hardship. But as we persevere, it has a beneficial effect not just on us, but others as well.
This type of encouragement is especially needed whenever a "passing of the torch" is near in a new generation of church leaders. This last letter from Paul reveals his heart and his priorities, which are sound doctrine, steadfast faith, confident endurance, and enduring Love.
