Last week we began going through Paul’s second letter to Timothy that Paul wrote as a prisoner in Rome for preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. What makes this letter unique is that Paul wrote it while awaiting his execution, essentially making this letter his “last words.” He used his last words to encourage Timothy, and all others, to be bold, courageous, and unashamed of Christ and the Gospel.
Despite his circumstances, Paul maintained his boldness. He said that he was not ashamed, and the reason for his boldness is “I know whom I have believed.”
Knowing whom he believed was the root of Paul's zeal and passion for the gospel. Paul understood God’s love and grace manifested by the cross, the grave, and the resurrection. The cross, the grave, and the resurrection encompass the most significant event in human history, which touches the very core of our most inner being. It was God’s supreme act of love for us. If we can begin to comprehend God’s amazing love and grace, we too can respond with a similar zeal and passion for the gospel.
