We have been going through Paul’s first letter to Timothy, the young understudy he appointed as pastor of the church in Ephesus. Paul tasked Timothy to fill a role that bears great responsibility. Paul knew Timothy’s job was going to be challenging and demanding, so Paul wrote two letters to Timothy to give guidance and to encourage him.
We believe these letters were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and they have been preserved so that we have them. The principles that we find in these letters are a source of encouragement for us as we face the difficulties and challenges in our world today.
On Sunday, as we come to the end of Paul’s first letter, we will see that Paul calls Timothy a “man of God.” That is a very noteworthy designation, especially since there is no one else in the New Testament who is called a “man of God.” What does that mean? What is its significance?
Hopefully, we will get a clearer understanding of what that means. Since we are saved by God’s grace and are called to a holy life, a life set apart to follow Christ, we too may be called “men and women of God” (2 Timothy 1:9; 1 Peter 1:16).
