Last week we unpacked Paul's advice, or guidelines, to seeing and treating those in the church appropriately as family: sisters, brothers, fathers and mothers. This teaching is very beneficial to safeguarding ministry leaders and fulfilling the call of compassion for others with Jesus as our example.
Paul continues next with care for widows, which goes back to the book of Acts, as widows were being overlooked and uncared for. We know that when members of a family, and especially God's family, come together in generosity and responsibility, everyone's needs can usually be met. Paul's letter to Timothy again uses guidelines for care and compassion for widows both old and young.
Family relationships are very important in God's eyes and Paul writes that a person who neglects his or her family responsibilities has denied the faith. Strong words, to encourage family to do their part in care, compassion and love.
