In this week’s text, we see that Paul gives Timothy some very basic instructions regarding his relationship with the members of his church. Paul uses familial terms (father, brother, mother, sister) consistent with the church being God’s family — the household of God:
“Do not rebuke an older man harshly but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.” (1 Timothy 5:1-2)
When Paul uses familial terms, he gives Timothy guardrails to keep his relationships above board. Without clear and distinct guardrails, a young pastor can easily fall over a cliff. It is important for church leadership to have guardrails. But whether or not we are in a position of leadership, all of us should have guardrails. We are all subject to temptation and failure. But thanks be to God and His boundless mercy and grace, we find forgiveness and restoration in Christ.
