Guidelines for Church Leadership
1 Timothy 3:1-16
This week Paul's letter is directed to church leaders who carry a heavy responsibility because the Church belongs to the living God. Responsibility and stewardship walk side by side with the titles overseer, pastor, deacon and elder. These positions should never be filled by popularity or pushing their way to the top, but chosen by the church because of their respect for the truth, both in what they believe, and in how they live.
All leaders should check themselves occasionally against Paul's standards for excellence, because those who are given great responsibility must meet high expectations. Many leaders often change the order of serving by neglecting family, and here Paul essentially places our relationship with Christ first, family second, and church third.
