A few weeks ago we read in 1 Corinthians 10 how Paul separated idol feasts from the celebration of the Lord's Supper. We learned that the feasts of any idol are worthless, insufficient, and inadequate. Paul's warning is always to flee from idolatry.
Here in chapter 11, Paul again addresses the Lord's Supper because of an issue in the Corinthian church concerning the observance and proper manner of observing the rite. Paul is also hearing of divisions and differences that have led to selfish conduct during the Communion meal, with some getting drunk and others going hungry. It seems Paul is referring to the early church custom of combining the love-feast or potluck gathering and the Lord's Supper.
Paul will remind and help them understand what the Lord's Supper means and how it is completely different from any other meal, with specific instructions on how it should be observed. — Pastor Don
