Last week James called out the rich oppressors as murders of the innocent. His and God's definition of murder was those being responsible for condemning innocent men, usually poor laborers who could not pay their debts, placing them in prison which forced them into selling all their possessions and even family members into slavery. This removed all opportunity to work and they usually ended up dying from starvation.
This Sunday, James brings everyone's favorite topic to the forefront: patience, or what farmers often refer to as waiting. The illustration is pointing to waiting for the return of Christ, of which many are anxious for and feel it's not happening fast enough. The truth is that God's plan and timing is perfect as we wait and persevere, stand firm, and trust in Him.
