As you know, we have been going through the book of James, which we could call a handbook on Christian living. Recently, we saw the difference between living with worldly wisdom and godly, Christian wisdom. As we embark on Chapter 4, James builds on what he had previously written. Here, James bluntly tells his readers that the worldly, self-focused, unspiritual road is the very one they have been following. That is what is causing the fights and quarrels among them. By traveling down this road, they try to get what they want and become combatants with those who stand in their way. Furthermore, James calls them adulterers in that they are cheating on God. They have violated their commitment and devotion to God by becoming friends of the world. James pleas for them to repent, turn around, and submit themselves to God. He encourages them to humble themselves before God and God, by his grace, will lift them up.
