Last week we looked at James' argument against favoritism to the wealthy and how it can be a hindrance to our witness for Christ. It shows why it is wrong, inconsistent with Jesus' teaching, results from evil thoughts, and insults people made in God's image. It is a by-product of selfish motives, and goes against the Biblical definition of Love, showing a lack of mercy to those less fortunate by being hypocritical.
This Sunday is a lesson on how to remedy these shortcomings by using the action word Works, which brings faith to the surface and we can actually see the changed life of a believer. James agrees we cannot earn our salvation by serving and obeying God, but such actions show that our commitment to God is real. Deeds of loving service are not a substitute for but a verification of our faith in Christ.
