Last week, we heard about Elijah and the showdown he had with the prophets of Baal and how their faith in Baal was totally obliterated by Yahweh, the God of Israel, the one and only True God of the universe. We also heard about what is to come, or the “main event” of modern times that Paul describes.
“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)
The promise of this “Main Event” gave us comfort for those who have preceded us in death “so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13) and we are encouraged by these words. This week, we will see that as followers of Christ, we are not to be concerned about any specific date or time of this “Main Event,” but we are to be concerned about being prepared for Christ’s return by living holy lives pleasing to God.
