At the close of Chapter 1, Paul expresses a serious concern about many people who claim to know God. One thing to remember as we wonder if they really do, is that we will not know for certain in this life, but a glance at their lifestyle will quickly tell us what they value and whether they have lives that include kingdom priorities. Our conduct speaks volumes about what we believe.
To open Chapter 2, Paul says, "But as for you" (NKJ) — or "You must" (NIV) — teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. We are not all pastors or teachers. But we are all ambassadors for Christ. Paul focuses first on older men and women who are grounded in the truths of the Bible and not open to being swayed by the powerful oratory of false teachers, the possible devastation of tragic circumstances, or the pull of human emotion. We are to learn the Bible, study theologies, apply Biblical principles and do what we learn.
