This week as we begin Paul's letter to Titus, Paul holds no punches with a longer than normal introduction of himself and his credentials, and gives us insight into his reason and purpose for living. As a servant of God he was committed to obeying God and proclaiming God's character, to people unfamiliar with it. On this small Island of Crete, which was likely a training center for Roman soldiers and having a strong pagan influence, was an opportunity beyond measure for sharing the Gospel and the character of God. Paul brings to the forefront the unfinished work of establishing correct teaching and doctrine by appointing elders in every town and equipping them to live for Jesus Christ, despite opposition from society. One important lesson from this section of Scripture is that a person's lifestyle and relationships can provide a window into his or her character.
