The Problem of Evil

August 4, 2024 Speaker: John Schwartz Series: Evidence for Our Faith

Topic: Faith

We are in our fifth week of looking at several lines of converging testimonial evidence that builds a cumulative case clearly demonstrating that God exists, he loves us, and is personally involved with us.

We looked at the several lines of testimony including Cause and Effect, Design and Purpose, and those stem from the religious nature of man: Common Consent, Emptiness and Divine Longing, and Religious Experience. Last week, we learned about how our innate sense of morality also points to God’s existence.

Regarding morality, this week I intend to address a formidable challenge to our faith, and that is the problem of evil. We believe that God is all-loving and absolutely good, yet evil exists. I think you would agree with me that we live in a world that has no shortage of evil. The fact is that our world is rife with evil; therefore, trying to make sense of it is one of the perennial conundrums that challenges the Christian worldview, especially to those who are experiencing tragedy and grief.

Is the pervasiveness of evil compatible with an all-loving, all-powerful God? This is the primary question that I will be trying to answer on Sunday.
