Topic: Gospel of John Passage: John 10:22–42
This week we are finishing John 10 as Jesus again faces questioning by the religious leaders — this time during the Feast of Dedication.
This takes place in Solomon's Porch, and most of these questioners didn't want to follow Jesus in the way He wanted to lead them. Even today, many people who ask for proof do so for the wrong reasons. The questioners hoped that Jesus would declare Himself Messiah for perverted reasons and would have been delighted to have Him drive out the Romans. However, Jesus did not come for this reason.
The doubters hoped Jesus would identify Himself so they could accuse Him of telling lies and of blasphemy. This is considered to be the clearest statement of Jesus' divinity He ever made. Jesus and His Father are not the same person, but they are one in essence and nature. Thus Jesus is not merely a good teacher — He is God.
Jesus' claim to be God is unmistakable, and the religious leaders wanted to kill him because of what their law said. Nothing could persuade them that Jesus' claim was TRUE.
See you Sunday, in person or online, when we'll learn more.
